The NBA shares historical patterns with other major U.S. sports, fluctuating between periods of championship balance and dominant dynasties. While less than half of NBA teams typically contend for the championship each season, a select few franchises have consistently secured titles.

Two teams, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, lead the pack with 17 championships each. The Lakers stand out as the sole team to have clinched an NBA title in each of the last four decades, with their most recent victory occurring in the 2019-20 season. Over the years, the Lakers have boasted iconic NBA figures and MVPs, from George Mikan, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, and Magic Johnson to Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Pau Gasol, and LeBron James in more recent times.

The Lakers’ historical achievements include being the first team to achieve a three-peat, securing three titles between 1952 and 1954 when they were known as the Minneapolis Lakers. Before relocating to Los Angeles in 1960, the team claimed five championships. However, the 1960s saw a championship drought for the Lakers, as the Boston Celtics dominated the era.

The Lakers rebounded in the 1970s with two championships, setting the stage for the Magic Johnson-Kareem Abdul-Jabbar era that yielded five more titles in the 1980s. The 1990s presented a less successful period for the Lakers until they clinched the championship in the 1999-00 season, marking the start of another three-peat featuring Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and notable role players such as Robert Horry. After this era, Bryant and Pau Gasol joined forces to secure two additional championships, further solidifying the Lakers’ legacy.

With 32 trips to the NBA Finals, the Lakers’ trophy count matches that of the Boston Celtics, who have reached the finals 22 times. The Celtics’ fortunes took a turn with the arrival of coach Red Auerbach in 1950, a change that coincided with the emergence of legendary Hall of Famer Bill Russell. The team claimed their first championship during Russell’s rookie season (1956-57) and proceeded to capture eight consecutive titles from 1959 to 1966.

Following two more championships in the 1960s led by Russell and two additional titles with John Havlicek at the helm in the 1970s, the Celtics welcomed the remarkable Larry Bird towards the latter part of the decade. Alongside Robert Parish and Kevin McHale, Bird contributed to three championships during the 1980s. Despite this illustrious history, the Celtics have only secured one more championship, achieved in the 2007-08 season, with a lineup featuring Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Rajon Rondo.
